Qutaybah narrated to us: Rashdin ibn Sa‘d narrated to us, from Abu Hani’ al-Khawlani, from ‘Abbas al-Hajari, from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Umar, who said: A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and asked: “Messenger of Allah, how often should I pardon the servant?” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained silent. The man asked again: “Messenger of Allah, how often should I pardon the servant?” He replied: “Seventy times every day.”
Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan gharib. ‘Abd Allah ibn Wahb also narrated something similar from Abu Hani’ al-Khawlani. Al-‘Abbas is Ibn Julayd al-Hajari al-Misri.
Qutaybah narrated to us: ‘Abd Allah ibn Wahb narrated to us, from Abu Hani’ al-Khawlani, with a similar chain and wording. Some narrators transmitted this hadith from ‘Abd Allah ibn Wahb with this chain but named ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Amr instead of ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Umar.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The source preserves a narrator variant in which some transmitters name ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Amr rather than ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Umar. The question concerns pardoning a servant; the Arabic says the Prophet ﷺ was silent before the man repeated it.
بِهَذَا الإِسْنَادِ وَقَالَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو،
Some transmitters report this route from ‘Abd Allah ibn Wahb as coming from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Amr, while the main text says ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Umar.
Should the competing Companion name remain explicitly identified as a transmission variant?
حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ،
The English witness omits the full chain and later parallel transmission route.
Should both routes be retained?
قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ غَرِيبٌ .
The hasan gharib grade and the identification of al-‘Abbas are absent from the witness.
Should these compiler notes be included?
