Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

Ahmad ibn Muhammad informed us: ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Mubarak informed us, from Sufyan, from Abu Harun al-‘Abdi, from Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “When one of you strikes his servant and remembers Allah, then raise your hands.”

Abu ‘Isa said: Abu Harun al-‘Abdi’s name was ‘Umarah ibn Juwayn. Abu Bakr al-‘Attar said: ‘Ali ibn al-Madini reported that Yahya ibn Sa‘id said that Shu‘bah considered Abu Harun al-‘Abdi weak. Yahya also said that Ibn ‘Awn continued narrating from Abu Harun until he died.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The command فارفعوا أيديكم literally means ‘raise your hands’; its intended force in this context is unclear. The English witness interprets it as ‘withhold your hands’, but that reading is not literal and is left for review.

  • قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ "‏ إِذَا ضَرَبَ أَحَدُكُمْ خَادِمَهُ فَذَكَرَ اللَّهَ فَارْفَعُوا أَيْدِيَكُمْ ‏" ‏ ‏.

The Arabic literally commands ‘raise your hands’ after one remembers Allah while striking his servant; the witness interprets this as withholding one’s hands, but the source does not explain the phrase.

Can the intended meaning of فارفعوا أيديكم be confirmed from another edition or commentary?

  • حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ،

The witness omits the Arabic transmission chain.

Should the full chain be included?

  • ‏ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ الْعَطَّارُ قَالَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْمَدِينِيِّ قَالَ يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ضَعَّفَ شُعْبَةُ أَبَا هَارُونَ الْعَبْدِيَّ ‏.

The source reports Shu‘bah’s criticism of Abu Harun through nested transmitters; the witness omits it.

Should the chain of attribution and weakness assessment be preserved in full?
