Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.
Qutaybah narrated to us: Yahya ibn Ya‘la narrated to us, from Nasih, from Simak ibn Harb, from Jabir ibn Samurah, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “For a man to teach his child good manners is better than giving a sa‘ in charity.”
Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is gharib. Nasih is Ibn al-‘Ala’, a Kufan narrator who is not considered strong by hadith scholars; this hadith is known only through this route. There is another narrator named Nasih, a Basran who narrates from ‘Ammar ibn Abi ‘Ammar and others; he is more reliable than this one.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The compiler distinguishes two narrators named Nasih: the Kufan Ibn al-‘Ala’ in this chain and another Basran narrator considered more reliable. The word yu’addib is rendered as teaching good manners, rather than physical punishment.
The Arabic first criticizes Nasih Ibn al-‘Ala’, the Kufan in this chain, then distinguishes another Basran Nasih who is more reliable.
Should the two narrators’ different reliability assessments remain explicitly contrasted?
The report compares educating a child with giving a sa‘ in charity; the measure is not converted in the source.
Should sa‘ remain transliterated with a brief glossary note?
The English witness omits the isnad and the critical note about Nasih.
Should the chain and narrator evaluation be included?
