Translation

Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

Yahya ibn Aktham and ‘Ali ibn Khashram narrated to us. They said: ‘Isa ibn Yunus narrated to us, from Hisham ibn ‘Urwah, from his father, from ‘A’ishah, that the Prophet ﷺ would accept gifts and reciprocate them.

There are also reports on this topic from Abu Hurayrah, Anas, Ibn ‘Umar, and Jabir. Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan gharib sahih through this route. We know it as a report traced back to the Prophet only through ‘Isa ibn Yunus, from Hisham.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The verb yuthibu means to recompense or reciprocate a gift. The compiler’s qualification is that the report is known as marfu‘ only through ‘Isa ibn Yunus from Hisham.

  • أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم كَانَ يَقْبَلُ الْهَدِيَّةَ وَيُثِيبُ عَلَيْهَا ‏.

The Arabic says the Prophet accepted a gift and reciprocated it; the witness’s ‘give something in return’ is broad but may obscure recompensing the giver.

Should ‘reciprocate gifts’ be retained as the concise rendering?

  • حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَكْثَمَ،

The English witness omits the chain from the two compilers to ‘A’ishah.

Should the full isnad be included?

  • ‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ غَرِيبٌ صَحِيحٌ مِنْ هَذَا الْوَجْهِ لاَ نَعْرِفُهُ مَرْفُوعًا إِلاَّ مِنْ حَدِيثِ عِيسَى بْنِ يُونُسَ عَنْ هِشَامٍ ‏.

The compiler says the report is not known as marfu‘ except through ‘Isa ibn Yunus from Hisham.

Should this route limitation stay with the translation?
