Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.
Abu al-Khattab Ziyad ibn Yahya al-Basri narrated to us: Hatim ibn Wardan narrated to us: Ayyub narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Mulaykah, from Asma’ bint Abi Bakr, who said: I said: “Messenger of Allah, I have nothing of my own except what al-Zubayr brings into the household. May I give from it?” He replied: “Yes. Do not keep your purse tightly closed, or it will be kept closed against you.” This means: “Do not count out and restrict it, or provision will be restricted for you.”
There are also reports on this topic from ‘A’ishah and Abu Hurayrah. Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan sahih. Some narrators transmit this hadith through the same chain from Ibn Abi Mulaykah, from ‘Abbad ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr, from Asma’ bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them both). More than one narrator transmitted it from Ayyub without mentioning ‘Abbad ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The Prophet’s reply includes an explicit ‘Yes’, which the English witness omits, and the Arabic gloss explains the image as not counting and restricting one’s giving, lest provision be restricted in return. The compiler records a chain variant with or without ‘Abbad ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr.
The Arabic says the Prophet replied ‘Yes’ and then gave the counsel; the witness omits ‘Yes’ and renders the response impersonally.
Should the affirmative answer remain explicit in the translation?
The source glosses the image as not counting/restricting giving, lest it be restricted in return; this is absent from the witness.
Should the explanatory gloss remain alongside the metaphor?
Some transmitters include ‘Abbad ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr between Ibn Abi Mulaykah and Asma’, while others omit him.
Should this isnad variation be retained in full?
