Al-Hasan ibn ‘Arafah narrated to us: Sa‘id ibn Muhammad al-Warraq narrated to us, from Yahya ibn Sa‘id, from al-A‘raj, from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: “The generous person is close to Allah, close to Paradise, close to people, and far from the Fire. The miser is far from Allah, far from Paradise, far from people, and close to the Fire. A generous person who lacks knowledge is more beloved to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, than a worshipper who is miserly.”

Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is gharib. We know it as a report of Yahya ibn Sa‘id, from al-A‘raj, from Abu Hurayrah only through Sa‘id ibn Muhammad. Sa‘id ibn Muhammad’s transmission of this hadith from Yahya ibn Sa‘id has been contradicted; rather, what is transmitted from Yahya ibn Sa‘id is a mursal report from ‘A’ishah.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The source expresses the report’s chain as an unusual route through Sa‘id ibn Muhammad and says that other transmission from Yahya ibn Sa‘id is mursal from ‘A’ishah. The contrast ‘generous person who lacks knowledge’ versus ‘miserly worshipper’ is preserved.

The compiler says Sa‘id ibn Muhammad was contradicted and that the known route from Yahya ibn Sa‘id is instead a mursal report from ‘A’ishah.

Should this source-critical qualification be displayed directly with the saying?

The hadith contrasts a generous person lacking knowledge with a miserly worshipper; the broad description jāhil is rendered as ‘lacks knowledge’.

Should jāhil be rendered as ‘ignorant’ or ‘lacking knowledge’ in this context?

The English witness omits the isnad and the compiler’s report criticism.

Should the chain and route qualification be retained?
