Abu Hafs ‘Amr ibn ‘Ali informed us: Abu Dawud informed us: Sadaqah ibn Musa narrated to us: Malik ibn Dinar narrated to us, from ‘Abd Allah ibn Ghalib al-Huddani, from Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Two traits do not come together in a believer: miserliness and bad character.”

Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is gharib; we know it only through the narration of Sadaqah ibn Musa. There is also a report on this topic from Abu Hurayrah.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The Arabic describes miserliness and bad character as traits that do not come together in a believer; the source classifies the report as gharib and says it is known only through Sadaqah ibn Musa.

The source says miserliness and bad character do not come together in a believer; the witness renders this as stinginess and bad manners.

Should ‘bad character’ be preferred to ‘bad manners’ for سوء الخلق?

The witness omits the chain from Abu Hafs ‘Amr ibn ‘Ali through Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri.

Should the complete chain be included?

Abu ‘Isa says this gharib report is known only through Sadaqah ibn Musa.

Should this route limitation remain attached to the maxim?
