Qutaybah narrated to us: Hammad ibn Zayd narrated to us, from Ayyub, from Abu Qilabah, from Abu Asma’, from Thawban, that the Prophet ﷺ said: “The most excellent dinar is one a man spends on his dependants; then a dinar he spends on his riding animal in the cause of Allah; then a dinar he spends on his companions in the cause of Allah.”

Abu Qilabah said: “He began with the dependants.” Then he said: “Who has a greater reward than a man who spends on his young dependants, through whom Allah keeps them chaste and makes them self-sufficient?” Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan sahih.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • Abu Qilabah explicitly notes that the Prophet began with dependants. The final clause attributes their chastity and sufficiency to Allah through the provider’s support.

The Arabic lists spending on dependants first, then a riding animal and companions in Allah’s cause; Abu Qilabah explicitly comments that the Prophet began with dependants.

Should the commentator’s observation remain in addition to the original order?

The closing clause says Allah keeps the young dependants chaste and makes them self-sufficient through the provider’s spending.

Should يُعفهم be rendered ‘keeps them chaste’ or ‘keeps them from need’ in this context?

The English witness omits the chain and the hasan sahih grade.

Should the complete chain and grade be included?
