حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْمَقْبُرِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي شُرَيْحٍ الْعَدَوِيِّ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ أَبْصَرَتْ عَيْنَاىَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَسَمِعَتْهُ أُذُنَاىَ حِينَ تَكَلَّمَ بِهِ قَالَ ‏ "‏ مَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ فَلْيُكْرِمْ ضَيْفَهُ جَائِزَتَهُ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالُوا وَمَا جَائِزَتُهُ قَالَ ‏"‏ يَوْمٌ وَلَيْلَةٌ وَالضِّيَافَةُ ثَلاَثَةُ أَيَّامٍ وَمَا كَانَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ فَهُوَ صَدَقَةٌ وَمَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ فَلْيَقُلْ خَيْرًا أَوْ لِيَسْكُتْ ‏" ‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ ‏.‏

Qutaybah narrated to us: al-Layth ibn Sa‘d narrated to us, from Sa‘id ibn Abi Sa‘id al-Maqburi, from Abu Shurayh al-‘Adawi, who said: My eyes saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and my ears heard him say: “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him honor his guest with his due hospitality.” They asked: “What is his due hospitality?” He replied: “A day and a night. Hospitality lasts three days, and anything beyond that is charity. Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent.”

Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan sahih.

  • Ja’izah here is the guest’s due hospitality, specified as a day and a night; the broader hospitality period is three days, with anything beyond that counted as charity.

  • أَنَّهُ قَالَ أَبْصَرَتْ عَيْنَاىَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَسَمِعَتْهُ أُذُنَاىَ حِينَ تَكَلَّمَ بِهِ قَالَ ‏ "‏ مَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ فَلْيُكْرِمْ ضَيْفَهُ جَائِزَتَهُ ‏"‏ ‏.

    Ja’izah in this context is a guest’s due hospitality, explained as one day and one night, not a reward paid to the guest.
