Al-Ansari narrated to us: Ma‘n narrated to us: Malik narrated to us, from Safwan ibn Sulaym, who traced it to the Prophet ﷺ, who said: “One who strives to care for a widow and a poor person is like a fighter in the cause of Allah, or like one who fasts by day and stands in prayer by night.”
Al-Ansari narrated to us: Ma‘n narrated to us: Malik narrated to us, from Thawr ibn Zayd al-Dayli, from Abu al-Ghayth, from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ, with similar wording. This hadith is hasan gharib sahih. Abu al-Ghayth’s name was Salim, a freedman of ‘Abd Allah ibn Mut‘i. Thawr ibn Zayd was Medinan, while Thawr ibn Yazid was Syrian.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The Arabic gives two transmission routes: one traced through Safwan ibn Sulaym, and another from Abu Hurayrah through Abu al-Ghayth and Thawr ibn Zayd. The final note distinguishes Thawr ibn Zayd from the similarly named Syrian Thawr ibn Yazid.
حَدَّثَنَا الأَنْصَارِيُّ،
A second route comes through Thawr ibn Zayd, Abu al-Ghayth, and Abu Hurayrah, and is described as similar to the first report.
Should the two routes be displayed as separate reports in the translated record?
Abu al-Ghayth is identified as Salim, and the Medinan Thawr ibn Zayd is distinguished from Syrian Thawr ibn Yazid.
Should both biographical clarifications remain in the English text?
حَدَّثَنَا الأَنْصَارِيُّ،
The English witness omits the chains and the second route’s corroborating narrator details.
Should both complete transmission routes be retained?
