Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

Hannad narrated to us: Abu Mu‘awiyah narrated to us, from al-A‘mash, from Shaqiq ibn Salamah, from ‘Abd Allah ibn Mas‘ud, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Hold fast to truthfulness, for truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. A person continues to tell the truth and seek truthfulness until he is recorded with Allah as a person of truth. Beware of lying, for lying leads to wickedness, and wickedness leads to the Fire. A servant continues to lie and pursue falsehood until he is recorded with Allah as a liar.”

There are also reports on this topic from Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, ‘Umar, ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Shikhkhir, and Ibn ‘Umar. Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan sahih.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The Arabic contrasts steadfast truthfulness, including actively seeking it, with persistent lying and pursuit of falsehood; the escalating moral outcomes are preserved.

The source uses al-birr for righteousness and al-fujur for wickedness or moral transgression, in a parallel causal sequence.

Should ‘wickedness’ be retained for الفجور, or would ‘immorality’ better fit the edition’s terminology?

The English witness omits the chain before ‘Abd Allah ibn Mas‘ud.

Should the complete isnad be retained?

The Arabic lists four related reports and a hasan sahih grade; the witness omits these notes.

Should the related narrators and grade be added?
