Yahya ibn Musa narrated to us, saying: I asked ‘Abd al-Rahim ibn Harun al-Ghassani: “Did ‘Abd al-‘Aziz ibn Abi Rawwad narrate to you from Nafi‘, from Ibn ‘Umar, that the Prophet ﷺ said: ‘When a servant lies, the angel moves a mile away from him because of the foul stench of what he has brought’?” ‘Abd al-Rahim confirmed it and said: “Yes.”
Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan gharib. We know it only through this route; ‘Abd al-Rahim ibn Harun alone transmitted it.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The source records Yahya ibn Musa asking ‘Abd al-Rahim whether ‘Abd al-‘Aziz ibn Abi Rawwad narrated this report to him; ‘Abd al-Rahim confirms the transmission. The report is then described as unique to ‘Abd al-Rahim’s route.
Yahya ibn Musa asks whether ‘Abd al-‘Aziz narrated the report to ‘Abd al-Rahim; the Arabic is about confirmation of transmission, not general approval.
Should the exchange be rendered explicitly as a chain-verification question?
The report says the angel moves a mile away because of the foul stench of the lie’s content.
Should ‘what he has brought’ be retained for ما جاء به, or should it be rendered as ‘what he has said’?
Abu ‘Isa grades this hasan gharib and says it is known only through the route uniquely transmitted by ‘Abd al-Rahim ibn Harun.
Should the grading and route limitation remain alongside the report?
