Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-A‘la al-San‘ani and several others narrated to us. They said: ‘Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, from Ma‘mar, from Thabit, from Anas, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Indecency does not enter anything without marring it, and modesty does not enter anything without adorning it.”
There is also a report on this topic from ‘A’ishah. Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan gharib; we know it only through the narration of ‘Abd al-Razzaq.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
Al-fuhsh is rendered as indecency and al-haya’ as modesty; the parallel verbs of marring and adorning are preserved.
Al-fuhsh means indecency or obscenity, while al-haya’ means modesty; the witness leaves both untranslated in transliteration.
Should the terms be translated directly as ‘indecency’ and ‘modesty’ rather than retained in Arabic?
The witness omits the isnad, the report from ‘A’ishah, and Abu ‘Isa’s grade and route limitation.
Should the full chain and compiler notes be included?
Abu ‘Isa says the hadith is hasan gharib and is known only through ‘Abd al-Razzaq’s narration.
Should this source limitation remain attached to the saying?
