Mahmud ibn Ghaylan narrated to us: Abu Dawud narrated to us, saying: Shu‘bah informed us, from al-A‘mash, who said: I heard Abu Wa’il narrate from Masruq, from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Amr, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The best of you are those with the finest character.” The Prophet ﷺ was neither vulgar nor obscene.

Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan sahih.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The Arabic says the Prophet ﷺ was neither fāhish nor mutafahhish; the paired terms are rendered as neither vulgar nor obscene.

  • ‏ وَلَمْ يَكُنِ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَاحِشًا وَلاَ مُتَفَحِّشًا ‏.

The Arabic distinguishes fāhish and mutafahhish; the translation renders these as vulgar and obscene.

Should the paired descriptions remain distinct in English?

  • حَدَّثَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ غَيْلاَنَ،

The English witness omits all transmitters in the Arabic chain.

Should the complete isnad be retained?

  • ‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ ‏.

The hadith is graded hasan sahih in Arabic; the witness omits this grade.

Should the compiler’s grade be added?
