Ahmad ibn Muhammad informed us: ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Mubarak informed us, from ‘Abd al-Malik ibn ‘Isa al-Thaqafi, from Yazid, the freedman of al-Munba‘ith, from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: “Learn enough about your lineages to maintain your ties of kinship. Maintaining ties of kinship brings affection among relatives, increases wealth, and prolongs one’s life.”

Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is gharib through this route. The phrase “prolongs one’s life” means an increase in lifespan.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The wording links learning lineage to maintaining kinship ties; Abu ‘Isa explicitly explains mansā’ah fī al-athar as an increase in lifespan.

The phrase mansā’ah fī al-athar is glossed by Abu ‘Isa immediately afterward as increased lifespan.

Does “prolongs one’s life” preserve the wording while the following gloss makes the intended meaning explicit?

  • حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ،

The English witness gives only Abu Hurayrah’s attribution and omits the fuller chain and Abu ‘Isa’s route classification and gloss.

Should the complete chain and Abu ‘Isa’s closing commentary remain in this translation?

  • ‏ يَعْنِي زِيَادَةً فِي الْعُمُرِ ‏.

Abu ‘Isa glosses the phrase mansā’ah fī al-athar as an increase in lifespan.

Should this explanatory gloss be retained after the hadith text?
