Qutaybah narrated to us: ‘Abd al-‘Aziz ibn Muhammad narrated to us, from al-‘Ala’ ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “When two people trade insults, the burden of what they say falls on the one who began, so long as the wronged person does not overstep.”

Reports on this topic are also related from Sa‘d, Ibn Mas‘ud, and ‘Abd Allah ibn Mughaffal. Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan sahih.
