Mahmud ibn Ghaylan narrated to us: Abu Dawud al-Hafari narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Ziyad ibn ‘Ilaqah, who said: I heard al-Mughirah ibn Shu‘bah say that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Do not revile the dead, lest you harm the living.”
Abu ‘Isa said: Sufyan’s companions differed over this hadith. Some narrated it as al-Hafari did; others narrated it from Sufyan, from Ziyad ibn ‘Ilaqah, who said: “I heard a man narrating near al-Mughirah ibn Shu‘bah, from the Prophet ﷺ, something similar.”
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The source preserves two differing transmission forms: one directly through al-Mughirah, and another in which Ziyad heard an unnamed man narrate something similar in al-Mughirah’s presence.
Abu ‘Isa records two different forms among Sufyan’s companions; in the second, Ziyad hears an unnamed man narrating near al-Mughirah rather than reporting directly from al-Mughirah.
Does the translation keep this isnad variation distinct and avoid conflating the two forms?
