Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

Muhammad ibn Bashshar narrated to us: ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us: Sufyan narrated to us, from Habib ibn Abi Thabit, from Maymun ibn Abi Shabib, from Abu Dharr, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: “Be mindful of Allah wherever you are. Follow a bad deed with a good one and it will erase it, and treat people with good character.” Another report on this topic is from Abu Hurayrah. Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan sahih.

Mahmud ibn Ghaylan narrated to us: Abu Ahmad and Abu Nu‘aym narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Habib, with this chain and a similar wording. Mahmud said: Waki‘ narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Habib ibn Abi Thabit, from Maymun ibn Abi Shabib, from Mu‘adh ibn Jabal, from the Prophet ﷺ, with a similar wording. Mahmud said: The sound version is the hadith of Abu Dharr.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The block records a variant attribution through Mu‘adh, then reports Mahmud’s judgment that the correct version is the Abu Dharr report.

The imperative اتق الله is a concise command to maintain taqwa; an exact English equivalent is difficult.

Does “Be mindful of Allah” convey the command without narrowing it to fear alone?

  • ‏ قَالَ مَحْمُودٌ وَالصَّحِيحُ حَدِيثُ أَبِي ذَرٍّ ‏.

The source preserves a similar report via Mu‘adh but then explicitly says the correct version is the Abu Dharr hadith.

Is the alternative attribution clearly presented as a variant rather than the preferred form?
