Ziyad ibn Ayyub al-Baghdadi narrated to us: al-Muharibi narrated to us, from al-Layth—I mean Ibn Abi Sulaym—from ‘Abd al-Malik, from ‘Ikrimah, from Ibn ‘Abbas, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: “Do not argue with your brother, tease him, or make him a promise that you then break.” Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan gharib; we know it only through this route. In my view, ‘Abd al-Malik here is Ibn Abi Bashir.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The compiler’s identification of ‘Abd al-Malik is presented as his view, not as part of the prophetic wording.
The verb تمازح may mean joking/playfully bantering; rendering it “tease” may sound more negative in English.
Would “joke around with him” better preserve the prohibition without implying mockery?
وَعَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ عِنْدِي هُوَ ابْنُ أَبِي بَشِيرٍ .
Abu ‘Isa identifies ‘Abd al-Malik as Ibn Abi Bashir only as his own view.
Is this identification retained as a qualified compiler opinion?
