Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

Abu Kurayb narrated to us: Suwayd ibn ‘Amr al-Kalbi narrated to us, from Hammad ibn Salamah, from Ayyub, from Muhammad ibn Sirin, from Abu Hurayrah—who, I think, attributed it to the Prophet—who said: “Love the one you love with some restraint; perhaps one day he will be someone you dislike. And dislike the one you dislike with some restraint; perhaps one day he will be someone you love.” Abu ‘Isa said: We know this hadith with this chain only through this route. It has also been narrated from Ayyub through another chain, by al-Hasan ibn Abi Ja‘far; that report is also weak. It is also transmitted through a chain from ‘Ali to the Prophet, but the sound version from ‘Ali is mawquf—his own statement.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The narrator’s uncertainty about whether the report was attributed to the Prophet is retained. Abu ‘Isa distinguishes weak raised routes from the sound statement stopping at ‘Ali.

أُرَاهُ رَفَعَهُ marks uncertainty about whether Abu Hurayrah attributed the saying to the Prophet.

Does “I think, attributed it to the Prophet” preserve the uncertainty about marfu‘ attribution?

Abu ‘Isa reports a different Ayyub route as weak and says the sound version from ‘Ali is mawquf, not established as a prophetic report.

Are the weak raised report and the sound statement stopping at ‘Ali distinguished clearly?
