Ibn Abi ‘Umar narrated to us: Sufyan narrated to us: ‘Amr ibn Dinar narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Mulaykah, from Ya‘la ibn Mamlak, from Umm al-Darda’, from Abu al-Darda’, that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Nothing will weigh more heavily on a believer’s scale on the Day of Resurrection than good character. Allah detests the shameless, foul-mouthed person.” Abu ‘Isa said: Reports on this topic are also related from ‘A’ishah, Abu Hurayrah, Anas, and Usamah ibn Sharik. This hadith is hasan sahih.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The two adjectives al-fahish and al-badhi’ are rendered as “shameless” and “foul-mouthed,” preserving both aspects without expanding them.
The paired terms الفاحش البذيء describe indecent and foul speech/conduct; English renderings vary in how strongly they express this.
Does “shameless, foul-mouthed person” preserve both terms without narrowing the first to speech alone?
