Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

Bun dar, Ahmad ibn Mani‘, and Mahmud ibn Ghaylan narrated to us: They said: Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Abu Ishaq, from Abu al-Ahwas, from his father, who said: I asked, “Messenger of Allah, I pass by a man who neither receives me as a guest nor offers me hospitality. Then he passes by me; should I repay him in kind?” He replied: “Do not receive him as a guest.” He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw that my clothes were shabby and asked, “Do you have any wealth?” I replied, “Allah has given me wealth of every kind, including camels and sheep.” He said: “Then let it be seen on you.” Abu ‘Isa said: Reports on this topic are also related from ‘A’ishah, Jabir, and Abu Hurayrah. This hadith is hasan sahih. Abu al-Ahwas’s name was ‘Awf ibn Malik ibn Nadlah al-Jushami. The phrase “receive him as a guest” means to host him; qira means hospitality.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The source’s direct answer to whether to reciprocate the earlier lack of hospitality is retained, even though it may sound unexpected. Abu ‘Isa explicitly glosses aqrihi as hosting him.

The question asks whether to reciprocate an earlier failure to host, and the answer is لا أقره, which the compiler later glosses as “host him.”

Does the answer remain “Do not host him” despite its apparent tension with the later exhortation to display one’s wealth?

  • ‏ وَمَعْنَى قَوْلِهِ ‏"‏ أَقْرِهِ ‏"‏ أَضِفْهُ وَالْقِرَى هُوَ الضِّيَافَةُ ‏.

Abu ‘Isa explicitly defines qira as hospitality and aqrihi as hosting him.

Are the compiler’s glosses retained so the answer’s meaning is clear?
