Abu Kurayb narrated to us: ‘Abdah ibn Sulayman, ‘Abd al-Rahim, and Muhammad ibn Bishr narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn ‘Amr, who said: Abu Salamah narrated to us, from Abu Hurayrah, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Modesty is part of faith, and faith is in Paradise. Obscenity is part of coarseness, and coarseness is in the Fire.” Abu ‘Isa said: Reports on this topic are also related from Ibn ‘Umar, Abu Bakrah, Abu Umamah, and ‘Imran ibn Husayn. This hadith is hasan sahih.

Rendered haya as modesty and badha’ as obscenity; rendered jafa’ as coarseness to retain the contrast without narrowing it to rude speech alone.
The paired terms الحياء and البذاء / الجفاء have overlapping senses; the latter can indicate coarse or harsh conduct, not only speech.
Do “modesty,” “obscenity,” and “coarseness” preserve the source’s contrast without over-narrowing jafa’ to rudeness?
