Ahmad ibn al-Hasan ibn Khirash al-Baghdadi narrated to us: Habban ibn Hilal narrated to us: Mubarak ibn Fadalah narrated to us: ‘Abd Rabbih ibn Sa‘id narrated to me, from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir, from Jabir, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Among the most beloved of you to me, and the closest to me in seating on the Day of Resurrection, are those of you with the best character. The most disliked of you to me, and the farthest from me in seating on the Day of Resurrection, are the babblers, the affected speakers, and the arrogant boasters.” They asked, “Messenger of Allah, we know who the babblers and affected speakers are, but who are the arrogant boasters?” He replied: “The arrogant.”

Abu ‘Isa said: A report on this topic is also related from Abu Hurayrah. This hadith is hasan gharib through this route. Some narrators transmitted it from Mubarak ibn Fadalah, from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir, from Jabir, from the Prophet, without mentioning ‘Abd Rabbih ibn Sa‘id; this version is more correct. A babbler is someone who talks excessively; an affected speaker is someone who speaks arrogantly over people and uses vulgar language toward them.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The source itself defines the first two terms near the end of the block; the third is glossed in the dialogue as the arrogant. The compiler also prefers a route that omits ‘Abd Rabbih ibn Sa‘id.

The three terms thartharun, mutashaddiqun, and mutafayhiqun are rare rhetorical labels; the source later explains the first two and identifies the third as the arrogant.

Do “babblers,” “affected speakers,” and “arrogant boasters” convey the categories while the source’s own glosses are retained?

Some transmitters omit ‘Abd Rabbih ibn Sa‘id from the chain, and Abu ‘Isa says that version is more correct.

Is this chain variant and the compiler’s judgment preserved without suppressing the initially presented route?

The compiler defines the babbler as excessively talkative and the affected speaker as one who speaks arrogantly over people and uses vulgar language toward them.

Do these definitions remain separate from the Prophet’s concise list?
