Muhammad ibn Bashshar narrated to us: Abu ‘Amir narrated to us, from Kathir ibn Zayd, from Salim, from Ibn ‘Umar, who said that the Prophet ﷺ said: “A believer is not given to cursing.” Abu ‘Isa said: A report on this topic is also related from ‘Abd Allah ibn Mas‘ud. This hadith is hasan gharib. Some transmitters narrated it through this same chain from the Prophet with the wording: “A believer should not be a habitual curser.” This wording clarifies the meaning.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • Rendered la‘‘anan as someone habitually given to cursing; the alternate wording uses ينبغي and is explicitly described as explanatory.

The alternate wording says لا ينبغي للمؤمن أن يكون لعانا and the compiler calls it explanatory, clarifying the force of the first version.

Does “should not be a habitual curser” preserve the explanatory wording without presenting it as a separate ruling?
