Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna narrated to us: Yazid ibn Bayan al-‘Uqayli narrated to us: Abu al-Rahhal al-Ansari narrated to us, from Anas ibn Malik, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whenever a young person honors an elder because of his age, Allah appoints someone to honor that young person when he reaches that age.” Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is gharib; we know it only through this shaykh, Yazid ibn Bayan. Abu al-Rijal al-Ansari is a different person.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The source distinguishes Abu al-Rahhal in the chain from another transmitter called Abu al-Rijal al-Ansari.

The reward clause refers back to the young person when he reaches old age; the Arabic uses “at his age” without restating the noun.

Does “when he reaches that age” make the referent clear without changing the promise?

Abu ‘Isa says Abu al-Rijal al-Ansari is another person, distinct from Abu al-Rahhal in the chain.

Are these similarly named transmitters kept distinct?
