‘Ali ibn Hujr narrated to us: Isma‘il ibn ‘Ayyash informed us, from ‘Umarah ibn Ghaziyyah, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: “Whoever is given a gift and is able to reciprocate, let him do so. If he is unable to, let him praise the giver; whoever praises has shown gratitude, and whoever conceals the favor has denied it. Whoever adorns himself with something he has not been given is like someone wearing two garments of falsehood.” Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan gharib; reports on this topic are also related from Asma’ bint Abi Bakr and ‘A’ishah. He explained, “Whoever conceals it has disbelieved,” to mean that he has denied that blessing.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
Abu ‘Isa explains kufr here as denying the blessing, not as a separate doctrinal ruling. The phrase “two garments of falsehood” is retained as the source’s image.
The saying uses kafara about concealing a favor, and Abu ‘Isa explicitly glosses it as denying that particular blessing.
Does “denied the favor” preserve the matn’s wording while making the source’s gloss clear afterward?
The final simile compares falsely adorning oneself with what one has not received to wearing two garments of falsehood.
Does retaining “two garments of falsehood” preserve the unusual image without overinterpreting it?
