Al-Husayn ibn al-Hasan al-Marwazi narrated to us in Makkah, and Ibrahim ibn Sa‘id al-Jawhari narrated to us, both saying: al-Ahw as ibn Jawwab narrated to us, from Su‘ayr ibn al-Khims, from Sulayman al-Taymi, from Abu ‘Uthman al-Nahdi, from Usamah ibn Zayd, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever receives a kindness and says to the one who did it, ‘May Allah reward you with good,’ has fully expressed his praise.”
Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan, jayyid, and gharib; we know it from Usamah ibn Zayd only through this route. A similar report has been narrated from Abu Hurayrah from the Prophet ﷺ, but when I asked Muhammad about it, he did not know it.
‘Abd al-Rahim ibn Hazim al-Balkhi told me: I heard al-Makki ibn Ibrahim say: “We were with Ibn Jurayj al-Makki when a beggar came and asked him for something. Ibn Jurayj told his treasurer, ‘Give him a dinar.’ The treasurer said, ‘I have only one dinar; if I give it to him, you and your family will go hungry.’ Ibn Jurayj became angry and said, ‘Give it to him.’ Al-Makki said: While we were with Ibn Jurayj, a man came with a letter and a purse sent by one of his brothers. The letter said, ‘I have sent you fifty dinars.’ Ibn Jurayj opened the purse and counted it; it contained fifty-one dinars. He said to his treasurer, ‘You gave one away, and Allah returned it to you and added fifty dinars.’”
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The anecdote about Ibn Jurayj follows Abu ‘Isa’s hadith and route comments; it is not part of the prophetic report. Rendered ablagha fi al-thana’ as fully expressing praise in response to the kindness.
The report says that saying “May Allah reward you with good” reaches fully in praise; the phrase is a formula of gratitude and commendation.
Does “has fully expressed his praise” preserve the force of ablagha fi al-thana’ without suggesting no further thanks are allowed?
Abu ‘Isa notes a similar Abu Hurayrah report and says “I asked Muhammad” but does not identify Muhammad further in this passage.
Should the name remain simply “Muhammad” without inferring a fuller identity?
The source continues after the hadith and grading with a separate anecdote transmitted through ‘Abd al-Rahim and al-Makki about Ibn Jurayj giving a dinar to a beggar.
Is this later anecdote clearly distinguished from the prophetic report?
