Muhammad ibn Humayd al-Razi narrated to us; al-Fadl ibn Musa narrated to us, from al-A‘mash, from Anas, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a tree with dry leaves. He struck it with his staff, scattering its leaves, and said: ‘Praise be to Allah, glory be to Allah, there is no god but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest—these make a servant’s sins fall away just as the leaves of this tree fall.’ He said: ‘This is a gharib hadith. We do not know that al-A‘mash heard from Anas; rather, he saw and looked at him.’

Al-Tirmidhi says the report is gharib and notes that al-A‘mash is not known to have heard from Anas, though he saw him. The English witness omits this chain caveat.

Should this transmission caveat be retained with the English witness?
