Ahmad ibn ‘Abdah al-Dabbi narrated to us; Hammad ibn Zayd narrated to us, from ‘Asim, from Zirr ibn Hubaysh, who said: I went to Safwan ibn ‘Assal al-Muradi. He asked, ‘What brings you?’ I said, ‘Seeking knowledge.’ He said, ‘I have heard that the angels lower their wings for the seeker of knowledge, pleased with what he does.’ I said, ‘I have a lingering doubt about wiping over the leather socks. Have you retained anything from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about it?’ He said, ‘Yes. When we traveled, we were instructed not to remove our leather socks for three days, except in the case of major ritual impurity; we did not remove them for defecation, urination, or sleep.’ I asked whether he had heard anything from the Messenger of Allah about love. He said, ‘Yes. On one of our journeys, a coarse and uncouth Bedouin at the back of the group called loudly, “Muhammad! Muhammad!” The people told him, “Stop! You have been forbidden to do that.” The Messenger of Allah answered him in a similarly loud voice, “Here I am!” The man said, “A person may love a people without having joined them.” The Messenger of Allah replied, “A person is with the one he loves.”’ Zirr said: ‘He continued relating to me until he told me that Allah placed a gate for repentance in the west, seventy years’ travel in width. It will not be closed until the sun rises from that direction. This is the meaning of Allah’s words: “The day when some of your Lord’s signs come, no soul will benefit from its faith …”’ Abu ‘Isa said: ‘This is a hasan sahih hadith.’
