Meaning of the Phrase
The phrase "as long as his soul does not reach his throat" refers to the final moments before death when the soul is ascending and the death rattle appears. This is the point when repentance is no longer accepted, as the time for deeds has concluded and the reality of the Hereafter becomes imminent.
Scholarly Commentary
This hadith demonstrates the vastness of Allah's mercy and the extended opportunity for repentance He grants to His servants. The scholars explain that true repentance requires three conditions: ceasing the sin, feeling remorse for having committed it, and firmly resolving not to return to it.
Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali comments that this hadith should inspire hope and urgency - hope in Allah's endless mercy, and urgency in repenting before the appointed time arrives unexpectedly.
Practical Implications
This teaching encourages Muslims to constantly turn to Allah in repentance without delay, for no one knows when their soul will reach their throat. It removes despair from the hearts of sinners while warning against postponing repentance.
The scholars caution that depending on this extended timeframe is dangerous, as death may come suddenly without warning. The wise person repents immediately and maintains that state.
