Qutaybah narrated to us; al-Layth narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Qays, the storyteller of ‘Umar ibn ‘Abd al-‘Aziz, from Abu Sirmah, from Abu Ayyub, who said as death approached him: ‘I have kept from you something I heard from the Messenger of Allah. I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: “If you did not sin, Allah would create a people who sinned and then sought His forgiveness, and He would forgive them.”’ He said: ‘This is a hasan gharib hadith. It has also been narrated from Muhammad ibn Ka‘b, from Abu Ayyub, from the Prophet, with similar wording.’ Qutaybah narrated this to us; ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi al-Rijal narrated to us, from ‘Umar, the freedman of Ghufrah, from Muhammad ibn Ka‘b, from Abu Ayyub, from the Prophet, similarly.
