Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

Muhammad ibn Bashshar narrated to us; ‘Abd al-Samad ibn ‘Abd al-Warith narrated to us; Hashim—namely, Ibn Sa‘id al-Kufi—narrated to us; Kinanah, the freedman of Safiyyah, told me: I heard Safiyyah say: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to me while four thousand date pits lay before me, with which I was glorifying Allah. I said, ‘I have glorified Allah with these.’ He said, ‘Shall I teach you something greater than what you have glorified Him with?’ I said, ‘Yes, teach me.’ He said, ‘Say: “Glory be to Allah as numerous as His creation.”’ Abu ‘Isa said: ‘This is a gharib hadith. We know it from Safiyyah only through this route, through Hashim ibn Sa‘id al-Kufi, and its chain is not well known. There is also a report on this topic from Ibn ‘Abbas.’

Al-Tirmidhi says the chain is not well known and the report is gharib, known only through this route; the English witness omits this critical caveat.

Should the chain assessment and related report reference be kept with the witness?
