Ahmad ibn al-Hasan narrated to us; ‘Abd Allah ibn Nafi‘ al-Sa’igh narrated to us by recitation to him, from Hammad ibn Abi Humayd, from Zayd ibn Aslam, from his father, from ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent out an expedition toward Najd. They gained much booty and returned quickly. A man who had not gone with them said, ‘We have never seen an expedition return faster or with better spoils than this one.’ The Prophet said, ‘Shall I direct you to people with even greater spoils and a quicker return? Those who attend the dawn prayer and then sit remembering Allah until the sun rises: they return faster and with greater spoils.’ Abu ‘Isa said: ‘This is a gharib hadith. We know it only through this route. Hammad ibn Abi Humayd is Abu Ibrahim al-Ansari al-Muzani, also Muhammad ibn Abi Humayd al-Madani, and he is weak in hadith.’

  • ‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى وَهَذَا حَدِيثٌ غَرِيبٌ لاَ نَعْرِفُهُ إِلاَّ مِنْ هَذَا الْوَجْهِ ‏.

Al-Tirmidhi says the report is gharib, known only by this route, and that Hammad ibn Abi Humayd is weak; the English witness omits this material assessment.

Should the chain criticism and narrator identification accompany the witness?
