‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman narrated to us; Yahya ibn Hassan informed us; Abu Mu‘awiyah narrated to us, from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Ishaq, from Sayyar, from Abu Wa’il, from ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): A mukatab—a contracted slave working toward freedom—came to him and said, ‘I am unable to fulfill my emancipation contract, so help me.’ He said, ‘Shall I teach you words that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) taught me? If you owed a debt as great as Mount Sir, Allah would pay it for you.’ He said, ‘Say: “O Allah, suffice me with what You have made lawful instead of what You have forbidden, and enrich me by Your bounty so that I need no one besides You.”’ Abu ‘Isa said: ‘This is a hasan gharib hadith.’
