Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna narrated to us; Muhammad ibn Ja‘far narrated to us; Shu‘bah narrated to us, from ‘Amr ibn Murrah, from ‘Abd Allah ibn Salamah, from ‘Ali, who said: I was ill when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by me. I was saying, ‘O Allah, if my appointed time has come, then give me relief; if it is still distant, then grant me more life; and if this is a trial, grant me patience.’ The Messenger of Allah asked, ‘What did you say?’ I repeated it to him. He struck me with his foot and said, ‘O Allah, grant him well-being’—or, ‘heal him.’ Shu‘bah was uncertain about which wording was used. After that I did not suffer from my ailment again. Abu ‘Isa said: ‘This is a hasan sahih hadith.’

  • ‏ شُعْبَةُ الشَّاكُّ ‏.

The Arabic explicitly attributes uncertainty between ‘grant him well-being’ and ‘heal him’ to Shu‘bah; the English witness’s parenthetical is less clear about who is uncertain.

Should the narrator responsible for the wording uncertainty be stated explicitly?
