‘Abd Allah reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘Ask Allah for His bounty, for Allah, Mighty and Sublime, loves to be asked. The best act of worship is waiting for relief.’ Abu ‘Isa said: This is how Hammad ibn Waqid narrated this hadith, though his transmission was opposed. This Hammad ibn Waqid is al-Saffar; he was not strong in retention, and in our view he is a Basran shaykh. Abu Nu‘aym narrated this hadith from Isra’il, from Hakim ibn Jubayr, from a man, from the Prophet ﷺ, as a mursal report. Abu Nu‘aym’s version seems more likely to be sound.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The English witness gives the prophetic wording but omits the source compiler’s substantial route criticism and preference for Abu Nu‘aym’s mursal version.
