Al-Bara’ reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘When you go to your bed, perform ablution as you do for prayer, then lie on your right side and say: “O Allah, I submit my face to You, entrust my affair to You, and lay my back in reliance upon You, in fear and hope of You. There is no refuge or escape from You except to You. I believe in Your Book which You sent down and in Your Prophet whom You sent.” If you die that night, you will die upon the primordial disposition (fitrah).’ He said: I repeated the words to memorize them, but said, ‘I believe in Your Messenger whom You sent.’ He replied: ‘Say: I believe in Your Prophet whom You sent.’ Abu ‘Isa said: This is a hasan sahih hadith. It has been narrated through other routes from al-Bara’, and we do not know of any narration mentioning ablution except this hadith.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The witness adds a detail that the Prophet ﷺ struck al-Bara’ on the chest; that wording is absent from this Arabic source text.
The English witness omits the compiler’s note that other routes exist and only this report mentions ablution.
