Mahmud ibn Ghaylan narrated to us: Abu Dawud narrated to us—he said: Shu‘bah informed us, from Ya‘la ibn ‘Ata’, who said: I heard ‘Amr ibn ‘Asim al-Thaqafi narrate from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: Abu Bakr said, ‘Messenger of Allah, prescribe something for me to say in the morning and evening.’ He said, ‘Say: “O Allah, Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, Originator of the heavens and the earth, Lord and Master of all things, I bear witness that there is no god but You. I seek refuge in You from the evil of my own soul and from Satan’s evil and his call to associate partners with You.”’ He said, ‘Say it when you reach the morning and evening, and when you go to bed.’ Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan sahih.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The Arabic phrase ‘wa shirkihi’ is rendered here as Satan’s call to associate partners with Allah. The word can also be read as ‘his snare/trap’; the English witness leaves it untranslated as ‘Shirk.’
وَمِنْ شَرِّ الشَّيْطَانِ وَشِرْكِهِ
The final word is vocalized in the source as shirkihi, though a related reading could mean his snare/trap; the English witness transliterates it without resolving the sense.
Should this be understood as Satan’s association of partners with Allah or as his snare/trap?
