Al-Husayn ibn Hurayth narrated to us: ‘Abd al-‘Aziz ibn Abi Hazim narrated to us, from Kathir ibn Zayd, from ‘Uthman ibn Rabi‘ah, from Shaddad ibn Aws (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet said to him: ‘Shall I direct you to the chief supplication for forgiveness? Say: “O Allah, You are my Lord; there is no god but You. You created me, and I am Your servant. I hold to Your covenant and promise as best I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil I have done. I acknowledge Your blessing upon me, and I confess my sins. So forgive me my sins, for no one forgives sins except You.” Whoever says it in the evening and then dies before morning, Paradise is assured for him; and whoever says it in the morning and then dies before evening, Paradise is assured for him.’ Reports on this subject are also related from Abu Hurayrah, Ibn ‘Umar, Ibn Mas‘ud, Ibn Abza, and Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with them). Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan gharib. ‘Abd al-‘Aziz ibn Abi Hazim is the son of Abu Hazim al-Zahid. This hadith has also been narrated from Shaddad ibn Aws by other routes.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The promise is conditional: one says the supplication in the evening and dies before morning, or says it in the morning and dies before evening. The Arabic includes further parallel reports and identifies ‘Abd al-‘Aziz ibn Abi Hazim as the son of Abu Hazim al-Zahid.
