Abu Kurayb informed us: Ishaq ibn Mansur—the Saluli—narrated to us, from Ibrahim ibn Yusuf ibn Abi Ishaq, from his father, from Abu Ishaq, from Abu Burdah, from al-Bara’ ibn ‘Azib (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: ‘When going to sleep, the Messenger of Allah would rest on his right side and then say, “My Lord, protect me from Your punishment on the Day You resurrect Your servants.”’ Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan gharib by this route. Al-Thawri narrated this hadith from Abu Ishaq, from al-Bara’, without mentioning anyone between them. Shu‘bah narrated it from Abu Ishaq, from Abu ‘Ubaydah and another man, from al-Bara’. Isra’il narrated it from Abu Ishaq, from ‘Abdullah ibn Yazid, from al-Bara’; and from Abu Ishaq, from Abu ‘Ubaydah, from ‘Abdullah, from the Prophet, with something similar.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The Arabic says the Prophet rested on his right side, not specifically that he rested his head on his right hand. The compiler lists differing chains, including one with no intermediary between Abu Ishaq and al-Bara’ and others with additional transmitters.
