‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman informed us: ‘Amr ibn ‘Awn informed us: Khalid ibn ‘Abdullah informed us, from Suhayl, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah used to instruct us that when one of us went to bed, he should say: ‘O Allah, Lord of the heavens and the earth, our Lord and Lord of everything, Splitter of the seed and the date-stone, Revealer of the Torah, Gospel, and Qur’an, I seek refuge in You from the evil of every possessor of evil whose forelock You hold. You are the First, and there is nothing before You; You are the Last, and there is nothing after You; You are the Outward, and there is nothing above You; You are the Inward, and there is nothing below You. Settle my debt for me and free me from poverty.’ Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan sahih.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The invocation names Allah as the First, the Last, the Outward, and the Inward, then asks for protection from all evil and relief from debt and poverty. ‘Forelock’ is the image used for every creature being under Allah’s control.
