Ibn Abi ‘Umar al-Makki narrated to us: Sufyan narrated to us, from Ibn ‘Ajlan, from Sa‘id al-Maqburi, from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah said: ‘When one of you leaves his bed and then returns to it, let him shake it out three times with the edge of his lower garment, for he does not know what came onto it after he left. When he lies down, let him say, “In Your name, my Lord, I lay down my side, and by You I raise it. If You take my soul, have mercy on it; and if You release it, protect it as You protect Your righteous servants.” When he awakens, let him say, “Praise belongs to Allah, who kept my body healthy, returned my soul to me, and permitted me to remember Him.”’ Reports on this subject are also related from Jabir and ‘A’ishah. Abu Hurayrah’s hadith is hasan. Some narrators transmitted this hadith with the wording, ‘Let him shake it out with the inner edge of his lower garment.’

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The report distinguishes leaving the bed and returning (when the bed is shaken out) from lying down (when the supplication is said) and waking (when another praise is recited). The Arabic notes a variant specifying the inner edge of the lower garment.
