Yahya ibn Khalaf narrated to us: Ibn Abi ‘Adi narrated to us, from Hisham ibn Hassan, from Muhammad ibn Sirin, from Kathir ibn Aflah, from Zayd ibn Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: ‘We were instructed to glorify Allah thirty-three times after every prayer, praise Him thirty-three times, and proclaim His greatness thirty-four times.’ An Ansari man then saw someone in a dream who asked, ‘Did the Messenger of Allah instruct you to glorify Allah thirty-three times after every prayer, praise Him thirty-three times, and proclaim His greatness thirty-four times?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ The figure said, ‘Make each of them twenty-five times, and include the declaration of divine oneness with them.’ The next morning he went to the Prophet and told him, and the Prophet said, ‘Do that.’ Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is sahih.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The Arabic first gives all three practices—tasbih, tahmid, and takbir—at 33, 33, and 34 repetitions; the English witness omits the initial tahmid. In the dream, the proposal is to make the count twenty-five for each of four phrases by adding tahlil, the declaration ‘There is no god but Allah.’
