Al-Walid ibn Muslim narrated to us: al-Awza‘i narrated to us: ‘Umayr ibn Hani narrated to me, saying: Junadah ibn Abi Umayyah narrated to me: ‘Ubadah ibn al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to me from the Messenger of Allah, who said: ‘Whoever wakes during the night and says, “There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He has power over all things. Glory be to Allah; praise belongs to Allah; there is no god but Allah; Allah is greatest; there is no might or power except through Allah,” then says, “My Lord, forgive me”—or he said, “then supplicates”—his prayer will be answered. If he then resolves to act, performs ablution, and prays, his prayer will be accepted.’ Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan sahih gharib.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The narrator is uncertain whether the person says specifically ‘My Lord, forgive me’ or makes a supplication more generally. The hadith distinguishes an answered supplication from a prayer that is accepted after ablution and resolve.

The narrator reports two alternative wordings at this point.
Was the supplication specifically “My Lord, forgive me,” or is the wording general?
