Abu Kurayb narrated to us; Mu‘awiyah ibn Hisham narrated to us, from Hamzah al-Zayyat, from Habib ibn Abi Thabit, from ‘Urwah, from ‘Aishah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say: ‘O Allah, grant well-being to my body and grant well-being to my sight, and make it endure as my heir. There is no god but Allah, the Forbearing, the Generous. Glory be to Allah, Lord of the Mighty Throne, and praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the worlds.’ Abu ‘Isa said: ‘This is a hasan gharib hadith. I heard Muhammad say: Habib ibn Abi Thabit did not hear anything from ‘Urwah ibn al-Zubayr. Habib ibn Abi Thabit is Habib ibn Qays ibn Dinar; he met ‘Umar and Ibn ‘Abbas. Allah knows best.’’

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The Arabic has the pronoun ‘it’ after ‘my sight’; the rendering ‘make it endure as my heir’ keeps that reference without resolving it further.

  • وَاجْعَلْهُ الْوَارِثَ مِنِّي

The pronoun follows the request for well-being of the speaker's sight; the phrase literally asks that ‘it’ be made the heir from him, but the intended nuance is not explicit in this wording.

Does ‘it’ refer to his sight being preserved after him, or is a different sense intended?

  • حَبِيبُ بْنُ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ لَمْ يَسْمَعْ مِنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ شَيْئًا

The source includes a report that Habib ibn Abi Thabit did not hear from ‘Urwah ibn al-Zubayr, affecting how the presented chain is understood.

Should this route be treated as disconnected in light of the attributed comment?
