Translation
Al-Agharr Abu Muslim narrated that

He bears witness, from Abu Hurairah and Abu Sa’eed Al-Khudri, that they bear witness, from the Messenger of Allah, that he said: “There is no group that remembers Allah, except that the angels encompass them, mercy covers them, and tranquility descends upon them: and Allah remembers (mentions) them before those who are with Him.”

Hadith Commentary: The Virtues of Group Remembrance

This noble hadith from Jami' at-Tirmidhi (3378) in the "Chapters on Supplication" reveals profound spiritual realities about collective remembrance of Allah. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) establishes through the testimony of two eminent companions, Abu Hurairah and Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri, the immense blessings that descend upon gatherings of dhikr.

The Fourfold Blessings of Dhikr

Angelic Encompassment: The angels surround the gathering, creating a spiritual barrier against distractions and evil influences, while recording the good deeds of participants.

Divine Mercy: Allah's rahmah (mercy) covers the gathering like a canopy, indicating special divine favor and forgiveness for those engaged in remembrance.

Spiritual Tranquility: Sakīnah (divine tranquility) descends upon hearts, removing anxiety and filling souls with peace and contentment from their Lord.

Divine Mention: The ultimate honor - Allah Himself mentions these servants before the angels in the highest assembly, demonstrating their elevated status.

Scholarly Insights

Classical scholars note that this hadith emphasizes the superiority of collective worship over individual practice when possible. The encompassing of angels signifies protection and honor, while divine mention before heavenly hosts represents the ultimate spiritual achievement for believers.

Imam Al-Munawi explains that "remembrance" here includes any form of worship where Allah's name is invoked - Quran recitation, studying religious knowledge, or specific dhikr formulas. The conditions require sincere intention and adherence to prophetic guidance.
