‘Ali ibn Hujr narrated to us; Ibn al-Mubarak informed us; Yahya ibn Ayyub informed us, from ‘Ubayd Allah ibn Zahr, from Khalid ibn Abi ‘Imran, that Ibn ‘Umar said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) seldom rose from a gathering without supplicating for his Companions with these words: ‘O Allah, apportion for us such fear of You as will keep us from disobeying You, such obedience to You as will bring us to Your Paradise, and such certainty as will make the calamities of this world easy for us. Let us enjoy our hearing, sight, and strength for as long as You keep us alive, and make them our inheritance. Let our retaliation be against those who wrong us; aid us against those who are hostile to us. Do not make our affliction concern our religion; do not make this world our greatest concern or the limit of our knowledge; and do not give power over us to one who will not show us mercy.’ Abu ‘Isa said: ‘This is a hasan gharib hadith. Some narrators transmitted this hadith from Khalid ibn Abi ‘Imran, from Nafi‘, from Ibn ‘Umar.’
