Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us; Muhammad ibn Yusuf narrated to us; Yunus ibn Abi Ishaq narrated to us, from Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn Sa‘d, from his father, from Sa‘d, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘The supplication of Dhu al-Nun, when he called upon Allah in the belly of the whale, was: “There is no god but You. Glory be to You; indeed, I was among the wrongdoers.” No Muslim ever calls upon Allah with it regarding anything without Allah answering him.’ Muhammad ibn Yahya said: Muhammad ibn Yusuf once related it from Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn Sa‘d, from Sa‘d, omitting ‘from his father.’ Abu ‘Isa said: ‘More than one narrator transmitted this hadith from Yunus ibn Abi Ishaq, from Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn Sa‘d, from Sa‘d, without mentioning “from his father.” Some narrated it from Yunus with “from his father” included, from Sa‘d. Yunus ibn Abi Ishaq sometimes mentioned “from his father” in this hadith and sometimes omitted it.’

  • ‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى وَقَدْ رَوَى غَيْرُ،

The Arabic includes a detailed isnad-variation note: some transmitters omit ‘from his father,’ while others include it; Yunus did both. The English witness omits this note.

Should this chain-variation note be tracked as a witness omission?
