Ibrahim ibn Ya‘qub al-Juzajani narrated to us; Safwan ibn Salih narrated to me; al-Walid ibn Muslim narrated to us; Shu‘ayb ibn Abi Hamzah narrated to us, from Abu al-Zinad, from al-A‘raj, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Allah Most High has ninety-nine names, one hundred less one; whoever comprehends them will enter Paradise. He is Allah, besides whom there is no god: the All-Merciful, the Especially Merciful, the King, the Most Holy, the Source of Peace, the Granter of Security, the Guardian, the Almighty, the Compeller, the Supreme, the Creator, the Originator, the Fashioner, the Oft-Forgiving, the Overwhelming, the Bestower, the Provider, the Opener, the All-Knowing, the Withholder, the Expander, the Abaser, the Exalter, the Giver of Honor, the Humiliator, the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing, the Judge, the Just, the Subtle, the All-Aware, the Forbearing, the Magnificent, the Oft-Forgiving, the Appreciative, the Most High, the Great, the Preserver, the Sustainer, the Reckoner, the Majestic, the Generous, the Watchful, the Responsive, the All-Encompassing, the Wise, the Loving, the Glorious, the Resurrector, the Witness, the Truth, the Trustee, the Strong, the Firm, the Protecting Friend, the Praiseworthy, the Enumerator, the Originator, the Restorer, the Giver of Life, the Giver of Death, the Ever-Living, the Self-Subsisting, the Finder, the Noble, the One, the Eternal Refuge, the All-Powerful, the Determiner, the One Who Brings Forward, the One Who Puts Back, the First, the Last, the Manifest, the Hidden, the Governor, the Most Exalted, the Source of All Good, the Accepter of Repentance, the Avenger, the Pardoner, the Compassionate, the Owner of Sovereignty, the Lord of Majesty and Honor, the Equitable, the Gatherer, the Self-Sufficient, the Enricher, the Withholder, the Harmer, the Benefactor, the Light, the Guide, the Incomparable Originator, the Everlasting, the Inheritor, the Guide to the Right Way, the Patient.’ Abu ‘Isa said: ‘This is a gharib hadith. More than one person narrated it to us from Safwan ibn Salih. We know it only through the narration of Safwan ibn Salih, who is regarded as trustworthy by hadith scholars. This hadith has also been narrated through other routes from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); however, in most of the narrations, we do not know of a sound chain that mentions the names except in this hadith. Adam ibn Abi Iyas also narrated this hadith through another chain from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and mentioned the names in it, but its chain is not sound.’

The English witness gives the supplication and list of names but omits al-Tirmidhi’s evaluation of its chain, the related-route discussion, and his caveat that the name-list is not established through sound chains in most narrations.

Should the compiler’s hadith-critical caveats be retained alongside the English witness?
